bopdotz is a small ceramics practice in Canberra where designer and maker Sara Hogwood creates pottery for everyday use. Works with a simplicity of form and finish are thrown on the potter’s wheel. They include mugs, jugs, beakers, bowls, vases and oil bottles, most made from a lovely lightly-speckled buff-coloured clay with quiet and unassuming glazes, sometimes enhanced with simple colourful brushwork. Other pieces use a mid-fire porcelain clay because its smoothness lends itself so well to glazes with a satin finish..

“Pottery is not a fast process: you throw a piece on the wheel, refine its shape when leather-hard, wait for it to dry, bisque fire it, glaze then fire again, a process that can take several weeks at best. The slow pace can sometimes be frustrating—think of cold winter weather when the clay takes longer to dry—but it is always enjoyable. The culmination of the process is the pleasure of taking pieces from the kiln looking just as you wanted them to look.”

As a low-production enterprise, Sara’s goal is to bring a little happiness into people’s lives through the medium of clay. And as an occasional maker of silver jewellery, you’ll sometimes find a few of these pieces amongst the pottery on her market displays.
